Historical Overview
Exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in the Hall of Mirrors officially ended World War I between Germany and the Allied Powers. The primary strategic objective of the Allies—particularly France—was to permanently cripple Germany's economic and military capability to prevent future aggression. The harsh terms of the treaty, including significant territorial losses, massive reparation demands, and the "war guilt clause," fostered deep resentment within the German public and inadvertently laid the groundwork for the rise of National Socialism.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade have declassified over 100 files as part of their declassification programme. Included in the release is a file on requests for a copy of the Treaty of Versailles. Organisations such as schools, government departments and industrial associations requested a copy.
