Accession of Queen Victoria
Historical Overview
Following the death of her uncle, King William IV, the 18-year-old Victoria ascended to the British throne. Her accession ended the personal union between Great Britain and the Kingdom of Hanover, where Salic law barred women from succession. Her subsequent reign of nearly 64 years became known as the "Victorian Era"—a pivotal period of profound industrial, cultural, and political transformation, as well as the height of the British Empire's global expansion.
