Maiden Flight of the Zeppelin

1900-07-02 00:00:00

Historical Overview

With the maiden flight of the "LZ 1" airship over Lake Constance near Friedrichshafen, Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin initiated the era of rigid airships. The primary strategic and technological objective of the project was to develop a steerable, motorized aircraft with a massive lifting capacity capable of traveling long distances regardless of wind direction. Although the initial flight lasted only about 18 minutes due to technical difficulties, the design—featuring a rigid aluminum framework covered in fabric—proved the viability of a technology that would shape transatlantic civil aviation and military reconnaissance in the decades to follow.
