Gulf of Tonkin Incident

1964-08-02 00:00:00

Historical Overview

The Gulf of Tonkin Incident involved two reported confrontations between North Vietnamese torpedo boats and U.S. destroyers (including the USS Maddox) off the coast of Vietnam. The primary strategic and geopolitical objective of the U.S. government under President Lyndon B. Johnson was to secure both domestic political backing and a legal mandate for direct military intervention to counter expanding communist influence in Southeast Asia. While the first engagement did occur, subsequent intelligence revealed that the second reported attack on August 4 was a false alarm caused by radar misinterpretations. Nevertheless, the administration leveraged the incident to pass the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution through Congress, effectively launching the United States into full-scale military involvement in the Vietnam War.
