Franco-Prussian War Begins

1870-07-19

Historical Overview

The formal declaration of war by France against Prussia marked the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War. The primary strategic and geopolitical objective of French Emperor Napoleon III was to check the rising hegemony of Prussia in Central Europe and stabilize his own faltering domestic regime through a foreign triumph. However, Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck skillfully leveraged the conflict to invoke mutual defense treaties, uniting the southern German states with the North German Confederation. The resulting German victory led to the collapse of the Second French Empire and culminated directly in the proclamation of the German Empire at Versailles.
