First Partition of Poland
5. August 1772
Historical Overview
With the signing of a tripartite treaty in St. Petersburg, the European superpowers of Prussia, Austria, and Russia formalized the First Partition of Poland-Lithuania. The primary strategic and geopolitical objective of the three monarchies was to maintain the delicate balance of power in Europe by exploiting the political vulnerability of the Polish commonwealth, thereby satisfying their own territorial ambitions without triggering a major continental war. Through this accord, Poland denuded roughly one-third of its territory and over a third of its population, initiating a systematic erosion of Polish sovereignty that culminated in the total dissolution of the state by the end of the 18th century.
