Egyptian Revolution of 1952
1952-07-23 00:00:00
Historical Overview
In a bloodless military coup, the "Free Officers Movement," led by Mohamed Naguib and Gamal Abdel Nasser, overthrew the British-backed King Farouk. The primary strategic objective of the revolutionary officers was to abolish the corrupt constitutional monarchy, eliminate lingering British colonial influence in the Suez Canal Zone, and implement sweeping agrarian reforms. The revolution resulted in the dissolution of the monarchy, the proclamation of the Republic of Egypt, and catalyzed a powerful wave of pan-Arab nationalism and decolonization across Africa and the Middle East, culminating in Nasser's rise to absolute presidency.
