During Napoleon Bonaparte's Egyptian campaign, French soldiers uncovering foundations near the port city of Rosetta discovered a fragment of an ancient stone stela. The primary strategic and scholarly significance of the artifact lay in its trilingual inscription, featuring Hieroglyphic, Demotic, and Ancient Greek scripts. Since Ancient Greek was well understood, the Rosetta Stone provided the essential key for Jean-François Champollion to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs in 1822.
