1944-06-06 00:00:00
Historical Overview
Known as "Operation Overlord," the Allied landings on the coasts of Normandy constituted the largest amphibious invasion in military history. Under the supreme command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, American, British, and Canadian forces stormed five heavily defended beachheads to establish a second front in Western Europe. This monumental operation marked the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi occupation.
