Capture of Jerusalem (First Crusade)
15. Juli 1099
Historical Overview
Following a grueling multi-week siege, Christian crusaders of the First Crusade successfully breached the walls and captured the city of Jerusalem. The primary strategic and religious objective of the expedition, launched by Pope Urban II, was to seize control of the Holy Land from the Muslim Fatimid Caliphate. The capture culminated in a brutal, days-long massacre of the city's Muslim and Jewish inhabitants. This victory achieved the central goal of the crusade, leading to the establishment of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and deeply fracturing relations between the Western and Eastern worlds for centuries.
