Battle of the Pyramids

21. Juli 1798

Historical Overview

During his Egyptian campaign, the French expeditionary army under Napoleon Bonaparte confronted the forces of the ruling Mamluks near Giza. Napoleon's primary strategic objective was to decisively crush Egypt's military caste, clearing the path to Cairo and positioning France to disrupt British trade routes to India. By employing highly disciplined, modern infantry square tactics, the French forces completely neutralized the legendary Mamluk cavalry charges. The overwhelming victory effectively ended centuries of Mamluk dominance in Egypt and solidified Napoleon's reputation as a military mastermind in the Middle East.
