Battle of Salamanca
22. Juli 1812
Historical Overview
During the Peninsular War, an allied Anglo-Portuguese army commanded by the Duke of Wellington confronted French forces under Marshal Marmont at the Battle of Salamanca. Wellington's primary strategic objective was to break the French grip on western Spain and shift the balance of power in the region. Executing a masterclass in tactical mobility, Wellington exploited a critical overextension in the French lines, routing their army in just a few hours. The decisive victory permanently damaged Napoleon's campaign on the peninsula, forced the temporary evacuation of Madrid, and established Wellington's reputation as an offensive military genius.
