Comment : This is one of the 2 guns mounted on slightly differing Vickers Mk I railway carriages, identified by the distinctive gun mounting with recoil buffers above the barrel and bogies with frames between rather than outside the wheels. This gun's mounting has a warping winch at the front, and the carriage frame has a diamond shape from the side. Western Front: Western Front (Belgium), Ypres Area. Unidentified soldiers, probably British, grouped around two 12 inch Mk III howitzers on Railway Hill used to support the Australian troops. The howitzer in the foreground is mounted on railway tracks, which allowed it to be moved to take up different positions along the railway line.
