The caption reads: "Will we have war or not?" If you don't put an end to your insolence, my worthless gaucho, I'll do to you what St. Peter did to Malchus! Are you listening? And don't you dare talk back to me!!!" The context is Brazil-Argentine disputes which brought the two countries to the brink of war. Argentina was building up its navy in the River Plate; the gaucho youth is holding a toy vessel on the end of a string.

A canhoneira Iguatemy (commandante Tamborim) no alto Paraná salvando no dia 7 de Novembro de 1868 a lancha a vapor Pimentel, que foi a pique, e na qual morreu o capitão de mar e guerra Guilherme José dos Santos e cinco praças. (Este desenho foi-nos remettido pelo capitão tenente Rodrigues Pinto.)

The dwelling of José Joaquim de Andrade Neves, soon to be made Barão do Tiunfo, in San Solano during the Paraguayan War. The dwelling, a thatched hut, has its on mangrullo (watch tower) and appears to be surrounded by a parapeted trench. This was part of the operation of encircling the Fortress of Humaitá. The photograph appears to have been taken in 1867.
