The Battle of Bailén took place on July 19, 1808. Under the command of Francisco Javier Castaños, the Spanish army scored a crucial victory agains the French forces, commanded by Pierre Dupont de L'Etang; after the French forces surrendered, the entirety of the soldiers went into Spanish captivity, and it was a morale booster for the Spanish forces in the war

Architect Jacinto Higueras (1877-1954) received in 1909 his first significant order : a commemorative monument to two major battles fought in the Province of Jaén, which are illustrated on its socle : 
the 1212 Batalla de las Navas de Tolosa (on the West), and 
the 1808 Batalla de Bailén (File:Jaén – Monumento a las Batallas – Bailén 1808.jpg) (on the East).
A bronze statue of Athena-Nike, goddess of Victory, tops the column. 


The Monument was inaugurated on October 20, 1912.

Architect Jacinto Higueras (1877-1954) received in 1909 his first significant order : a commemorative monument to two major battles fought in the Province of Jaén, which are illustrated on its socle : the 1212 Batalla de las Navas de Tolosa (on the West), and the 1808 Batalla de Bailén (File:Jaén – Monumento a las Batallas – Bailén 1808.jpg) (on the East).
