Taken in the early days of the siege, shows General Piet Cronje (afterwards captured at Paardeberg), whip in hand, standing at the breech of the 94-pounder "Long Tom" nicknamed "Creechy" (abbreviation for Marguerite), or "Creaky," which had frequent duels with the little Nordenfeldt. On his right, pipe in mouth, is Assistant General J.P. Snyman, and on his left is Captain of the Transvaal State-Artillery, P.J. van der Merwe.

The escritoire consists of a knee-hole desk with a set of four drawers each side of the knee-hole and a superstructure of a large central cupboard, a set of four small drawers each side of the cupboard and each enclosed by a door, and a writing slide below the central cupboard. The whole is inlaid with pictorial scenes featuring Maori and a scene of Auckland Harbour, ferns and other representations of New Zealand flora. Motifs inspired by features from Maori art also occur. All are in such exquisite detail that it has been possible to identify the plants and source of pictorial features. Decorative carvings on the superstructure and in the knee-hole are also a feature of the desk.
