Unterzeichnung des Versailler Vertrags
Historische Übersicht
Genau fünf Jahre nach dem Attentat von Sarajevo besiegelte die Unterzeichnung des Versailler Vertrags im Spiegelsaal von Versailles das offizielle Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs zwischen dem Deutschen Reich und den Alliierten. Das primäre strategische Ziel der Siegermächte – insbesondere Frankreichs – war es, die wirtschaftliche und militärische Macht Deutschlands dauerhaft zu schwächen, um zukünftige Aggressionen zu verhindern. Die harten Friedensbedingungen, darunter massive Gebietsverluste, immense Reparationsforderungen und die alleinige Kriegsschuldclausel, verbitterten die deutsche Bevölkerung und legten den Nährboden für den Aufstieg des Nationalsozialismus.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade have declassified over 100 files as part of their declassification programme. Included in the release is a file on requests for a copy of the Treaty of Versailles. Organisations such as schools, government departments and industrial associations requested a copy. The file has many letters of thanks to the Prime Minister William Massey upon receival of a copy of the Treaty.
