Historische Übersicht

Durch dieses wegweisende Abkommen teilten die Seemächte Portugal und Spanien die neu entdeckten Gebiete außerhalb Europas untereinander auf. Die vom Papst sanktionierte Demarkationslinie verlief westlich der Kapverdischen Inseln: Alle Territorien östlich dieser Linie fielen an Portugal, was dem Land später den Anspruch auf Brasilien sicherte, während die Gebiete westlich davon an Spanien fielen.
