Juneteenth – Ende der Sklaverei in Texas

Mit dem Eintreffen von Unionsgeneral Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas, und der Verkündung des Befehls über die sofortige Freiheit aller Sklaven ging dieser Tag als „Juneteenth“ (Kofferwort aus June und nineteenth) in die US-Geschichte ein. Obwohl Präsident Lincoln die Emanzipationsproklamation bereits zweieinhalb Jahre zuvor erlassen hatte, wurde sie im entlegenen Texas erst nach dem Ende des Bürgerkrieges militärisch durchgesetzt. Der Tag markiert das tatsächliche Ende der Sklaverei in den Konföderierten Staaten und ist heute ein offizieller US-Bundesfeiertag.

It served as the local Confederate and then Federal military headquarters for Texas during the Civil War.
