The battle of Heligoland was given due attention in the Danish weekly Illustreret Tidende. The battle took place on the 9th of May, and two days later the Danish squadron was at Kristiansand, where the severely wounded were brought ashore and the dead were buried. On the 15th of May the squadron arrived at Copenhagen, and lieutenant Hansen of the Heimdal had a sketch of the battle ready for Carl Neumann, who used it as basis for the drawing that went along with the account of the battle in the May 22, 1864 issue.

Note: Neumann made two nearly identical paintings of the battle.

The battle of Heligoland at the crucial moment when the burning Schwarzenberg changes course and heads for the protection of neutral, British, Heligoland. Painting by H.J. Marcher, who was aboard the frigate Jylland in the battle, serving as a lieutenant. A number of later paintings of the battle bear close resemblance to this work.
