Schlacht an der Alma

The Storming of the Great Redoubt at the Alma (detail)

The battle of the Alma in 1854 (1856), by Horace Vernet

A depiction of the Coldstream Guards, with fixed bayonets, advancing under fire towards the Russian redoubt defending the River Alma (NAM). Woodville leaned towards portraying troops as he guessed they would appear, rather than how they did. Roger T. Steam wrote that this painting "showed guardsmen in erroneous coatees, laced and single-breasted like drummers'" (Gooch, p. 220)
